The Impact of SO2 on TiO2's CO2 Reduction Efficiency

Imagine trying to clean up the air by using sunlight to convert CO2 into something useful. This is what scientists call photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a popular material for this job, but it's not perfect. Impurities like sulfur dioxide (SO2) can mess things up. Scientists looked at how SO2 affects two different types of TiO2 crystals, called (101) and (001). On the (101) type, SO2 quickly deactivates the catalyst. This is because SO2 binds to a spot that's super sensitive to light-induced changes. This spot quickly turns into sulfate (SO42-), blocking the active site and making the catalyst useless.

But on the (001) type, SO2 doesn't cause as much trouble. It binds to a weaker spot, preventing it from turning into sulfate. This keeps the catalyst working and makes CO2 reduction more stable. This research shows that SO2's effect on CO2 reduction depends on the type of TiO2 crystal used. It also highlights the importance of designing catalysts with the right crystal structure for better performance.
