The Impact of a Short Bike Ride on Creative Thinking
Tuesday, June 17, 2025
The participants did the AUT under three different conditions: after exercising, during exercising, or after watching an exercise video. The results showed no big differences between the control group and those who exercised afterward. However, those who did the task while exercising had lower scores in originality, the number of ideas, and the practicality of their ideas. This drop in performance could be due to the challenge of doing two things at once.
So, a 20-minute bike ride doesn't seem to boost creativity and might even hinder it if you try to be creative while exercising. This study points out the need for more research. Scientists need to figure out how different types, lengths, and times of exercise affect creative thinking. Only then can we fully understand how to use exercise to get the most out of our brains.
The study also raises questions about the practicality of exercising while trying to be creative. It's clear that multitasking during creative tasks can be counterproductive. This is something to keep in mind whether you're an artist, a student, or just someone trying to come up with new ideas. It might be better to exercise before or after your creative session, rather than during.
