The Growing Fan Base of Women's Sports
Portland, Oregon, USA,Tuesday, May 13, 2025
The survey also highlighted differences in how fans engage with sports. Men's sports, with their larger leagues and extensive media coverage, have a more dedicated audience. About two-thirds of men's sports fans attend games frequently or occasionally, compared to roughly half of women's sports fans. This difference could be due to the fact that women's sports fans are less likely to be attached to a specific team.
The growing popularity of women's sports is also reflected in the expansion of leagues. The WNBA, for example, is adding new teams and increasing the number of regular-season games. This expansion is a response to the increasing interest and investment in women's sports.
However, the survey also revealed that a significant portion of women's sports fans are casual viewers. While nearly 9 in 10 fans of both men's and women's pro sports watch, listen to, or read about their respective sports, a higher percentage of women's sports fans are occasional consumers. This could be due to the fact that women's sports are still finding their footing in terms of media coverage and accessibility.
The survey was conducted just before the start of the 2025 WNBA season, a year of expansion for the league. The league is debuting a new franchise and increasing the number of regular-season games, which could further boost the popularity of women's sports.
