The Great Shift: Harris' Rise to the Forefront of Change

As the 2024 presidential election heats up, a new national poll reveals a significant shift in the dynamics of the race. Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the leading candidate, gaining a 5-point lead over former President Donald Trump among registered voters. This turnaround is largely attributed to Harris' remarkable 16-point increase in popularity, the largest jump for any politician in NBC News polling since President George W. Bush's surge following the 9/11 attacks. Harris' favorability has skyrocketed, with 48% of registered voters now holding a positive view of her, compared to 32% in July. Her lead over Trump is not limited to just popularity; she also holds an advantage on being seen as competent and effective, as well as having the mental and physical health to be president.

The poll further highlights Harris' strengths on key issues, including protecting immigrant rights, abortion, and representing change. Trump, on the other hand, maintains leads on securing the border, the economy, and dealing with the cost of living, but these advantages have shrunk since Biden's exit from the race. Despite these gains, the poll also contains warning signs for Harris and the Democratic Party. Inflation and the cost of living remain the top concern for voters, and 66% of voters believe their family income is falling behind the cost of living. Additionally, 40% of voters are more concerned that Harris will continue the same approach as Biden's presidency.
