The much-anticipated Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been plagued by problems this year, causing anxiety for students, families, and educational institutions. A series of glitches and delays have forced the Education Department to postpone the FAFSA launch for the 2025-26 academic year until December 1, aiming to provide additional testing time for the online form. However, this delay has already had consequences on college enrollments, with numerous higher-education officials reporting decreased enrollment and reduced racial or ethnic diversity in their freshman classes. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has committed to improving the FAFSA process, admitting the struggles faced by students and institutions. The Department of Education is striving to streamline the application experience, aiming for completion times of 15-20 minutes.
