Waltz mentioned that Trump is looking into ways to "preserve" the popular app. This news comes after a report from The Washington Post suggested that Trump might issue an executive order to delay the enforcement of a law that could ban TikTok across the United States by this Sunday. Last week, the Supreme Court listened to arguments in a legal battle brought by TikTok, its Chinese parent company ByteDance, and users of the app. The Justices seemed likely to support the law, which demands that ByteDance sell TikTok due to national security concerns or face a ban in one of its largest markets.

Waltz explained that while the president-elect sees TikTok as a great platform that has benefited his campaign, he also wants to safeguard user data. "He's a deal maker, " Waltz said, hinting at possible negotiations to keep TikTok operational. During a Senate hearing on the same day, Pam Bondi, Trump's pick for attorney general, avoided answering a question about whether she would enforce a TikTok ban. This is a significant shift for Trump, who tried to ban TikTok during his first term due to national security worries. However, during his 2024 presidential campaign, he joined TikTok and used it to connect with younger voters, especially men, by sharing content aimed at going viral. He even promised to "save TikTok" and credited the platform with helping him gain more youth votes.
