The Future of the Welterweight Crown
Belal Muhammad has a clear view on who should fight for the UFC welterweight title and who will actually get that opportunity.
He says Michael Morales, a fighter who has never lost a match and finished his recent opponent in the first round, deserves the shot.
Morales’ win over Sean Brady at UFC 322 was a clean knockout that happened the same night Islam Makhachev won the title.
“Finishing Brady the way he did… that was the perfect performance at the perfect time,” Muhammad praises Morales.
When it comes to who will be called up, Muhammad has a different answer.
He believes Ian Machado Garry will receive the call instead of Morales, even though Garry’s recent win over Muhammad and his growing popularity are in the spotlight.
Muhammad questions whether Garry can handle a five‑round fight, noting his durability and cardio might be lacking. He also says Kamaru Usman should not even be in the title conversation.
Muhammad acknowledges that a fighter’s record is only one part of what the UFC considers.
Marketing, fan appeal, and a fighter’s ability to promote themselves can be just as important.
Garry has a strong support base in Ireland and is known for his charismatic promotion, giving him an edge over Morales in the eyes of the organization.
If the champion ends up facing Garry, Muhammad warns that Islam Makhachev could struggle if he is taken down early. A takedown would give Garry a chance to dominate and could make for a tough night for the title holder.
In short, Muhammad sees Morales as the most deserving contender, but he predicts Garry will get the official title shot because of his marketability and fan connection.
