The Fishy Turnaround: How England's Rivers Got Healthier

Fish populations in England's rivers have been on a rollercoaster ride over the past four decades. Once struggling due to water pollution and changes in land use, these aquatic creatures have shown remarkable improvements. Scientists looked at data from 16, 124 surveys at 1180 sites across England, covering rivers of all types and pressures. They found that the number and variety of fish species have gradually increased since the 1980s, with a big boost happening in that decade.

Brown trout and roach populations have fluctuated, but there's no clear increase in pollution-sensitive species despite better wastewater treatment and water quality. While the overall trend is positive, some fish species are showing complex changes that need more study. This is the first time anyone's looked at long-term, national trends for England's freshwater fish, giving us a better understanding of how our rivers are doing in a crowded, industrialized country.
