The Dry Start, Wet End: North Idaho's Weather Shift

Last year, North Idaho hoped for rain to ease the two-year drought. News from November to January showed that hope turning into a reality. Rain and snow fell, giving a boost to the soil and ski resorts. This weather was just right, not too much, not too little. As of mid-January, snowpack at high elevations was 95% to 118% of normal, while lower areas got more rain than snow. The drought is steadily improving, with the U. S. Drought Monitor showing Abnormally Dry to Moderate Drought conditions.

January brought a cold, dry spell. But don't worry, winter's not over yet! Forecasts point to wet weather and colder temperatures by early February, continuing into March. This could mean more snow, especially in the mountains. The snowmelting process might start by April 1. Spring runoff could see higher river flows, depending on the snowmelt speed and spring weather. La Niña's influence is expected to fade soon, with conditions turning neutral by March-May 2025. The outlook for March to May is wetter and cooler.
