The Call to Action: Is America Ready?
USASunday, October 6, 2024
The defense industry that won World War II is now a shadow of its former self. It struggles to produce weapons systems quickly enough or in sufficient quantities, as seen in Ukraine. Meanwhile, global threats are on the rise. The U.S. faces three revisionist powers—China, Russia, and Iran—each aiming to expand their influence at the West's expense.
China, under Xi Jinping, has adopted an aggressive foreign policy, encroaching on neighbors' sovereignty and making economic inroads into the Global South. Russia, despite its difficulties in Ukraine, remains a persistent power with clear imperial designs. Iran, once struggling, now sees its strategic situation improve due to regional disorder and lackluster U.S. policy, leading to greater geopolitical ambitions.
These powers are coordinating more closely, from military exercises to information warfare. The next U.S. president must reframe the approach to Great Power Competition to respond effectively. The question remains: Is America still prepared to be the "arsenal of democracy"?
