Deep in the heart of Thailand, a secretive feline has made a surprising comeback. The flat-headed cat, a species thought to be nearly gone from the country, has been spotted after a 30-year disappearance. This small, round-eyed cat is one of the rarest in the world, with only about 2,500 adults left in the wild.

A Picky Habitat

These cats are picky about their homes. They love dense, wet places like peat swamps and mangroves. But these habitats are shrinking fast. People are converting land for farming, leaving the cats with fewer places to live. The last time anyone saw a flat-headed cat in Thailand was way back in 1995.

Camera Traps Reveal a Surprise

Last year, a team from Panthera and Thailand's Department of National Parks set up camera traps in Princess Sirindhorn Wildlife Sanctuary. Guess what they found? Flat-headed cats! The cameras caught them 29 times. It's hard to say how many cats that means, though, because they all look pretty similar.

A Mother and Her Kitten

One big highlight was seeing a mom cat with her baby. That's a good sign because these cats usually only have one kitten at a time. But even with this good news, there's still a lot we don't know about them. They're shy, nocturnal, and their homes are tough to get to.

The Road Ahead

Kaset, a vet and researcher, says this discovery is just the beginning. The real challenge is figuring out how to protect these cats so they can live safely alongside humans. These cats aren't just in Thailand. You can also find them in Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. They love eating fish, frogs, and shrimp.

A Call to Action

So, while this rediscovery is exciting, it's also a reminder that we need to do more to help these rare cats survive. Their future depends on us.
