Texas Republicans Speak Out on Near-Miss Execution

On Monday, Texas Republicans on the House committee for criminal justice shared their concerns about the state's near-execution of a man named Robert Roberson. Roberson was accused of killing his two-year-old daughter in 2002 by shaking her, a claim that's been disputed by new scientific evidence. Representative Jeff Leach said he believed Roberson was innocent and he almost became the first person in the U. S. to be executed based on the controversial "shaken baby syndrome" theory.

The committee's subpoena for Roberson to testify temporarily halted his execution. However, there's a divide among Republicans, with Attorney General Ken Paxton refusing to let Roberson testify in person, and lawmakers rejecting a phone testimony. The hearing also saw a clinical psychologist, Dr. Phil, expressing his belief in a miscarriage of justice in Roberson's case.
