Tesla’s Updated Model Y Hits Asia-Pacific Roads: What’s New?

Tesla has recently rolled out its refreshed 2025 Model Y in the Asia-Pacific region. This updated model, codenamed "Juniper, " comes with revamped styling to stay competitive with brands like Kia and Volvo. While it keeps the same chunky frame as previous models, the new Model Y boasts a slicker look with smoother front and rear ends. The headlights are smaller and flank a sleek light bar across the front, echoing the design language of the Cybertruck more than the Model 3. Inside, the Model Y shares many features with the Model 3, such as ventilated seats, a rear-seat display, and a light strip wrapping around much of the vehicle. However, it introduces a different steering wheel. Unlike the Model 3, which has turn signal buttons on the wheel, the Juniper Model Y uses a classic stalk system. This might be a strategic move to stay competitive, especially in China where Tesla faces tough competition from BYD.

As for the drive, Tesla is offering two options in Australia: rear-wheel drive and a long-range all-wheel drive model. The long-range version promises up to 342 miles (551 km) by WLTP standards, or around 307 miles by US EPA standards. However, US models could differ in battery specs and range. The timing is significant. In 2024, Tesla saw its first drop in vehicle deliveries since 2012, despite improving in China. The redesigned Model Y will start shipping in China in March 2025 and is expected to reach other markets in a few months, although the US delivery date is still uncertain.
