Teaching Relgious Leaders to Help People with Family Planning Decisions

Muslim communities are known to have an unsatisfied demand for family planning, yet many people are uncertain about birth control because they are worried it will conflict with their religious beliefs- their families and emotional well-being on the line. Tanzania is one of those countries. This is especially true in Tanzania where a part of the country's Islamic culture includes their beliefs about reproduction. This can be due to a lack of knowledge about the medical and theological sides. In a effort to do something about this, an experiment was conducted. Two mosques in the country were invited to participate in present a day-long educational session in April 2022. The goal was to look at the effects of a point-of-view that could be brought home by religious leaders. The session was focused on the social, medical and faith aspects of family planning. This was done with religious leaders of all ages and genders to see if this might play a significant role. Fast forward a little. It was June 2022. Of the leaders, 48 were asked if they were better informed and if they had recommended the program.

The result was astounding. The survey indicated that it was extremely acceptable and goal focused. It was 4. 5 out of 5 for each category it was rated on. Many of the leaders felt that it was enlightening, giving them a view that included both medical and religious perspectives. As a result, most of the leaders heard many good things about their communities learning more about family planning. The feedback was very positive and many people were enthusiastic about the program which included couples communicating better about their family planning- with the same people coming back and recommending the seminar. Many religious leaders noted that everyone was assigned together a separate time for men and women to explore the material talk more. This was also something that participants appreciated. The program helped the religious leaders feel comfortable teaching the family planning. The leaders indicated that the program could have an amazing potential to help with the country’s high rate of maternal and child mortality. The program doubled down on the belief that religious leaders can play a significant role in the health of the community when they share family planning information like this.
