Tackling Crime from the Bottom Up: A Data-Driven Approach
United StatesSunday, September 15, 2024
Another evidence-informed strategy is "focused deterrence," which aims to reduce crime by targeting high-risk individuals and groups. Police and community groups work together to confront these individuals with a choice: continue down a path of violence or reject it and receive support from the community. This approach has been shown to be successful in cities like Boston, Cincinnati, and New Orleans.
Community members can also play a vital role in crime prevention through street outreach programs. These programs have been shown to reduce violence by encouraging pro-social bonds between community members and establishing anti-violence norms through credible messengers. For example, outreach programs in New York and Los Angeles have reduced gun injuries and violent crime.
What if we assume that national conversations on crime are the most effective way to reduce crime? What might we be missing by neglecting local solutions? How can we ensure that hotspot policing and focused deterrence strategies don't perpetuate systemic inequalities? What role can community members play in crime prevention, and how can we support them in their efforts?
