Swiss Keeps Trade Talks With US on Course
Switzerland Maintains Trade Path with the United States
Switzerland has decided to stay on its current path for trade talks with the United States, aiming to wrap up a tariff agreement that began last year. The country’s Economy Minister announced this stance after the U.S. opened investigations into industrial overcapacity and alleged forced labour in 16 key trading partners, including Switzerland.
The U.S. had previously slapped a steep 39 % duty on Swiss goods, the highest among European nations, following President Trump’s decision in August. In November, Switzerland and Washington reached an interim deal that lowered the tariff to 15 %, matching the European Union’s rate.
Now, Swiss officials are working to formalise this arrangement. Washington has urged a final agreement by the end of March, and Swiss leaders are ready to discuss how best to respond to the U.S. inquiries.
The Minister also noted that Switzerland would consult with other affected countries, exploring collective strategies to address the U.S. investigations. This collaborative approach reflects Switzerland’s broader diplomatic positioning.
Despite the pressure, the Swiss government maintains that negotiations are progressing steadily. The country’s leadership is prepared to navigate the complexities of trade policy while safeguarding its economic interests.
