Survivors of Trump Rally Shooting Blame Secret Service for Failures

In July, an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump during a Pennsylvania rally resulted in one death and injuries to Trump and two other men: Jim Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57. These survivors, in their first public interview since the event, have accused the U.S. Secret Service of negligence. They spoke with Tom Llamas on NBC Nightly News, expressing their dissatisfaction with the security arrangements. Dutch, who was shot in the liver, said, "There was 100% negligence on the Secret Service, right down to the inter-department communication." Copenhaver, who was injured in his triceps and abdomen, added, "It wouldn't have happened if security was tight." The survivors' attorneys plan to file lawsuits seeking damages. Both men have faced ongoing health problems due to their wounds. Copenhaver has lost weight, walks with a cane, and still feels pain, while Dutch requires help for his bullet wound and has lost weight, too. He can't drive or lift heavy items.

The Secret Service has faced criticism for its failures. An internal investigation found poor communication among those responsible for Trump's safety and inadequate planning, which allowed the assassination attempt. The then-director, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned shortly after the incident. About two months later, the Secret Service stopped another attempt to assassinate Trump. They noticed a man aiming a rifle at Trump's Florida golf course. Trump recently returned to the Pennsylvania rally site, with billionaire Elon Musk speaking at the event. Trump was criticized for saying the deceased spectator, Corey Comperatore, "had the best seat in the house." Dutch expressed his anger at the situation, saying, "It should have never happened." Despite these events, Trump's unique perspective on the assassination attempt drew mixed reactions.
