A federal appeals court ruled that the way these mandates were set up was unconstitutional because the people making the recommendations weren't appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Both the Biden administration and the challengers want the Supreme Court to settle this matter.

The case doesn't threaten the whole ACA, but it could make some important preventive services expensive again. For instance, lung cancer screenings that could save thousands of lives each year might be affected. Other services like well-baby visits and vaccines aren't part of this case.

The US Solicitor General, Elizabeth Prelogar, said the appeals court's decision could hurt healthcare protections that have been in place for 14 years and help millions of Americans.
