Superbugs' Stretch: Tailored Vaccines for Compromised Immune Systems
LaboratoryWednesday, January 15, 2025
In this new method, scientists use a special vaccine delivery system called PLGA microsphere vaccines. These tiny, safe packages hold whole bacterial parts inside and out. After a single shot, these vaccines release their contents on a schedule, giving both initial and booster effects.
What's more, when these vaccines are combined with neutrophils, they trigger something called NETosis. This is a process where neutrophils create a gel-like web at the injection site. This web helps recruit other immune cells and prevents harmful bacteria material from spreading.
Tests on mice have shown that this strategy is super effective, protecting both healthy and immunocompromised mice from a nasty bug called MRSA.
