Sumi Jo Teams Up With SM Classics for Global Reach

South KoreaWednesday, April 22, 2026
SM Entertainment’s classical branch, SM Classics, has just added a superstar to its lineup. The world‑famous soprano Sumi Jo will now record exclusively with the label, marking a significant step in its push to become a leading name in classical music worldwide. Jo first made history in 1993 when she became the first South Korean to win a Grammy for Best Opera Recording. Since then, she has earned acclaim across the globe and is widely regarded as one of the finest sopranos of her era. Her partnership with SM Classics means that future projects will be produced and distributed across international markets, allowing more listeners to experience her artistry. The label’s CEO highlighted the move as a chance to strengthen Korean influence in the global classical scene. “We are investing in top talent and creating fresh projects that broaden the audience for classical music, ” he said. This partnership underscores a commitment to both tradition and innovation.
In May, Jo will launch her 40th‑anniversary album, Continuum. The record features eleven tracks and collaborations with celebrated composers such as Yiruma and Takatsugu Muramatsu. The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Young‑sun Choi, provides the accompaniment. A duet with the group SUHO and a special appearance by violinist Danny Koo add extra excitement to the release. Jo described Continuum as a bridge between her long‑standing legacy and new creative horizons. “My music never stays static; it keeps evolving, ” she explained. The album blends challenging coloratura pieces with contemporary works, reflecting her desire to honor classical roots while exploring modern sounds. After the album launch, Jo will tour Korea in May and later host her second International Vocal Competition in France in July. These events aim to further spread her influence and inspire upcoming singers. The Continuum album is slated for release on May 8, offering fans a fresh glimpse into Jo’s dynamic range and the evolving landscape of classical music.
