Storms Ahead: Thursday Brings Chance of Strong Weather

Metro Detroit, USAThursday, July 9, 2026
A calm and warm evening will cover Metro Detroit on Wednesday, but that peace ends when a cold front arrives Thursday. The front may drop scattered showers and thunderstorms, with the possibility of some powerful storms. During Wednesday night the sky will shift from partly cloudy to mostly clear, and temperatures will stay mild, climbing into the upper 60s or about 70 degrees with a gentle southwest wind. A few showers or storms could affect areas north of I‑69, but the city itself should stay dry. Thursday starts mostly clear. The heat will rise quickly into the 70s and 80s, peaking in the mid‑to‑upper 80s before clouds gather. In Southeast Michigan there is a marginal risk for severe weather, rated level 1 out of 5. The best chance for strong storms is in the afternoon and evening.
The main threats include wind gusts up to 60 mph, heavy rain that could cause localized flooding, small hail, and even a rare tornado. Not everyone will see severe weather, but any storm that develops could bring heavy rain and strong winds. People planning outdoor activities Thursday afternoon or evening should set up multiple ways to receive weather alerts. The rain threat lingers into the night as the front moves south, but showers and thunderstorms should ease overnight. Friday may bring a few leftover showers, especially south of M‑59. A bit more rain and storms could appear in the afternoon, but drier air will move in with highs in the lower to mid‑80s. The weekend looks much calmer. Saturday will be mostly sunny or partly cloudy, with highs in the mid‑80s. Sunday continues the sunshine trend and will reach the mid‑to‑upper 80s. Early next week, temperatures rise again to about 90 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. Humidity should stay manageable, keeping the heat index below 100 degrees.
