Layering up with adjustable clothes can help you stay comfortable in varying temperatures, the DNR explained. It's also a good idea to check how the weather and roads are before you head out. Keep essentials like ice picks, ropes, flashlights, and extra gear handy.

“The right gear makes a big difference, ” said conservation officer Brandon Vacek of the DNR. “Layers help you adjust to the temperature easily. ” He also advised to never go alone. Tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back. Make sure your phone or communication devices work in remote areas.

Staying hydrated and carrying snacks are important, according to the DNR. If you don't feel well, it's better to stay home.

Ice conditions can be tricky, so it's smart to wear something that can help you float and have ice picks ready. For snowmobilers, they should stick to the right side of trails, keep speeds safe, and avoid drinking alcohol.
