State AGs Join Fight to Keep Biden's Gun Control Policies

On Thursday, a group of state attorneys general, all Democrats, asked to join a federal legal effort. They want to preserve two gun control policies from the Biden era. One policy requires background checks for buyers at gun shows. The other bans a type of trigger that can make a semiautomatic weapon fire rapidly. These policies might not align with President-elect Donald Trump's views. He has promised to roll back what he calls "Biden's attacks on the Second Amendment. " Interestingly, one of the policies is similar to a ban on "bump stocks" that Trump supported in his first term.

This legal intervention is a clear sign that partisan fights are likely to start from day one of Trump's presidency. Some Democratic politicians have urged for a more cooperative approach, but the attorneys general are concerned that Trump's Justice Department might not defend these rules. This could harm states like New Jersey, according to Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin.
