Stars Shine Bright for Justice at Golden Globes
The 83rd Golden Globes turned into a stage for protest. Many famous faces stood up against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This happened just days after Renée Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE officer.
Stars Speak Out
Stars like Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, and Ariana Grande wore pins. These pins said "BE GOOD" and "ICE OUT." They wanted to honor Renée Nicole Good and Keith Porter. The pins also reminded people to be kind and stand up for what is right.
"It's sad that a mother was killed by an ICE agent. People need to speak up and protest against the government's actions." Wanda Sykes
Jean Smart wore the pin while accepting her award. The pins were a way to remember the victims and call for change.
The Incident
Renée Nicole Good was shot after her car allegedly swerved toward an ICE officer. Since then, protests have happened in Minneapolis and across the U.S. Local leaders, like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, criticized the ICE officer's actions.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the officer acted in self-defense. They called Good's actions "an act of domestic terrorism."
Mixed Reactions
People on social media had different opinions. Some praised the celebrities for standing up for what they believe in. Others criticized them, calling them hypocrites.
Billy Bob Thornton recently spoke about politics at award shows. He said if someone wins an award, they should honor the people who gave it to them. He thinks award shows are not the place to talk about other issues.
