Starmer's Big Challenge: Brexit, Economy, and Keeping His Promises

In a surprising turn, Keir Starmer won the 2024 election by winning over what his team referred to as "hero voters. " These people love their country, supported leaving the EU, and have traditionally voted for the Conservatives. The 2019 election saw many of them vote for Boris Johnson and his party. This shift of "red wall" seats in the North from the Labour party to the Tories. In order to win them back for the Labour party, Keir Starmer made a firm promise. Seeking election, Starmer pledged not to undo Brexit. Starmer’s Labour has made it clear that rejoining the EU’s single market or customs union is not on the table during this parliament. Brexit wasn’t just about politics; it was a reaction to economic hardships. Many voters felt immigration took away jobs and left them behind.
