Western Massachusetts Faces a Shift in Addiction Recovery Services

Carlson Recovery Center Scales Back Detox Care Amid Staffing Crisis

Western Massachusetts is losing one of its few dedicated detox centers this week as the Carlson Recovery Center shifts its focus from round-the-clock medical care to stabilization services.

Why the Change?

The center’s detox program, once licensed for 32 beds, has been operating at half capacity due to a severe shortage of nurses. Now, only those with the most severe withdrawal symptoms will be transferred to a 24/7 detox facility in Worcester. The rest will receive lighter medical supervision locally—still supportive, but less intensive.

Will Fewer People Get Help?

Doctors argue that most patients don’t need full detox—just a stable environment, therapy, and medical check-ins. Only about 15% require the highest level of care, and the center will ensure safe transport for them.

A Growing Trend in the Region

This isn’t an isolated issue. In 2023, two other detox centers in the area shut down, increasing demand on Carlson. Now, as it adjusts its approach, the big question remains: Will people understand that help is still available—just in a different form?

Debate Over Treatment Standards

Critics argue that recovery services should always provide the highest level of care. But advocates highlight improvements in addiction treatment—such as medications like methadone that allow some patients to manage withdrawal at home.

The real challenge isn’t the level of care—it’s whether enough support exists at all.
