Arizona LGBTQ+ Group Drops Lawsuit Over Gender‑Based Sports Ban

In a move that may feel like the end of an uphill fight, an LGBTQ+ rights group has decided to drop its lawsuit against Arizona’s Department of Education. The case challenged a state rule that bars boys from participating in girls’ sports.

The decision follows the Supreme Court’s recent 6‑to‑3 ruling that supports similar bans in other states. The high court said Title IX permits schools to separate teams by biological sex and that states can enforce those separations under the Constitution.

Superintendent Tom Horne welcomed the dismissal, calling it a win for girls’ athletics. He noted that Arizona has had the ban in place since 2022, and that a pair of New York law firms had sued to declare the rule unconstitutional.

Representatives from the National Center for LGBTQ Rights said they chose to withdraw the suit because their clients no longer wished to continue. One spokesperson explained that the case began over three years ago when a middle‑school student was involved, and she now prefers to move on for personal reasons.

While the lawsuit is no longer active, it remains unclear whether the organization will pursue any other legal avenues. The court’s decision may influence how future disputes over gender and sports are handled nationwide.

Horne framed the outcome as a “victory for girl athletes and common sense.” He pointed to stories of girls who had trained hard for scholarships or Olympic dreams, only to face larger boys in competition. The new ruling is meant to remove that obstacle.
