The world of data transmission just got a major upgrade. A new type of fiber optic technology has smashed previous speed records. It can send data at an astonishing 1. 02 petabits per second.  To put that into perspective, it's like downloading every movie on Netflix 30 times over.  This was achieved over a distance of 1, 808 kilometers.  The fiber used is incredibly thin, about the same width as a human hair.

The technology behind this breakthrough is a 19-core optical fiber.  It was developed by a team in Japan.  Each core in the fiber acts like a separate lane on a highway, allowing data to travel independently and quickly.  This design fits into existing infrastructure, so no major upgrades are needed.  The fiber operates efficiently across the C and L bands, which are commercial standards used globally.  This means it can be easily integrated into current systems.

The experiment involved a complex setup.  Signals traveled through an 86. 1-kilometer fiber segment 21 times.  This simulated a journey across a continent, like from Berlin to Naples.  To keep the signals strong over such a long distance, researchers used a dual-band optical amplification system.  This system boosted signals in the C and L bands, allowing 180 different wavelengths to carry data at the same time.  At the receiving end, a 19-channel detector and advanced processing helped to untangle the signals, extracting data at unprecedented rates.

This achievement is the result of years of work.  Earlier efforts had limitations, such as short distances or the use of less practical wavelength bands.  The new 19-core fiber overcomes these issues with its uniform core design.  This design achieves a capacity-distance product that is 14 times higher than previous records for standard fibers.

As global data traffic is expected to triple by 2030, this technology offers a promising solution.  It could enable transoceanic cables that move massive amounts of data quickly.  Researchers are now focusing on refining production techniques for mass deployment and exploring AI-driven signal processing to further boost speeds.  This breakthrough positions fiber optics as a key player in the future of internet infrastructure.
