Space Weather Delays Hurricane Recovery
USA, Fort MyersFriday, October 11, 2024
Satellites and communication systems might face issues. Power grids, already weakened by the hurricanes, might get worse. Navigation systems used in disaster relief could also be degraded. The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) warned FEMA and state agencies about this.
This storm was caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from sunspot AR3848 on October 8. When a CME hits Earth's magnetic field, it can create geomagnetic storms. These storms cause beautiful auroras but also damage electrical grids and affect GPS and satellite operations.
More powerful storms can cause more severe impacts. The G4 storm last night made the northern lights visible as far south as Cuba and Mexico. The SWPC predicts strong to severe conditions continuing into the 11th and 12th of October.
