South Carolina’s High School Sports League Faces New Leadership
The South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) is preparing for a major change at its top position.
Jerome Singleton, who has led the league since 2005, will step down as commissioner by July 1, 2027. The decision followed a lengthy meeting where the Executive Committee voted unanimously.
Singleton’s Legacy
Singleton’s long tenure has overseen numerous developments in state high‑school athletics. In a statement, committee chair Adam Lanford said the league will work quickly to find his replacement and will honor Singleton’s contributions for a year‑and‑a‑half.
“We appreciate everything he has done,” Lanford added.
Legislative Shake‑Up
At the same time, lawmakers in South Carolina are debating a bill that would replace the SCHSL with a state‑run body to manage public school sports. Both parties claim that if the bill passes, students and schools would not see major changes in how their sports programs operate. The House could begin discussion and a vote on the proposal this week.
What It Means for High‑School Athletics
This shift in leadership and potential restructuring raises questions about how high school athletics will be governed moving forward. Stakeholders are watching closely to see what the next chapter for South Carolina sports will look like.
