South Bend is gearing up to tackle the annual leaf cleanup challenge. The city's dedicated crew is set to resume operations on December 24th, weather permitting. The cleanup will commence in Zone 7 before moving on to other areas.
Weather-Dependent Schedule
Earlier in December, the cleanup was temporarily halted due to heavy snow and freezing temperatures. With a slight improvement in weather conditions, the crew is back in action. However, if adverse weather conditions persist, the cleanup may be paused again.
Ideal Conditions for Cleanup
For the crew to efficiently perform their tasks, the following conditions must be met:
- Leaves must be free of snow.
- Temperatures should remain above freezing.
- Wet leaves can cause equipment issues due to clogging.
Resident Responsibilities
To ensure a smooth cleanup process, residents are asked to:
- Rake leaves to the tree lawn area by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day. Avoid raking leaves into the street.
- Keep leaf piles clean. Remove any sticks, trash, or other debris.
- Do not park on or in front of the leaf piles.
