South Africa’s ruling party faces pressure over President’s cash controversy

South Africa, JohannesburgTuesday, May 12, 2026
A sudden court decision has forced South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) to cut short its usual plans and call an urgent meeting. The country’s top court recently ruled that impeachment talks against President Cyril Ramaphosa can restart, over an old scandal called “Farmgate. ” This scandal started in 2020 when a large bag of foreign money was found hidden in a sofa on Ramaphosa’s private game farm in Phala Phala. The president has always said the cash came from selling buffalo, but questions keep coming up about how much money was really involved and whether it was properly declared.
The ANC, which holds most seats in Parliament, previously blocked any impeachment attempts in 2022 by using its majority. Now, after the court’s decision, Parliament must finally create a special committee to investigate again. The speaker of Parliament has already said they will follow the court order and begin the process. Ramaphosa has stated he respects the court’s ruling and denies any wrongdoing, but the controversy keeps growing and puts his leadership under fresh scrutiny. This situation shows how power in South Africa can both protect and challenge leaders. While the ANC has the numbers to stop investigations, the courts can overrule those decisions when legal procedures are ignored. The upcoming discussions within the ANC will not only decide the fate of the president but also reveal how much the party still controls Parliament when push comes to shove.
