Winter has been particularly harsh this year, and it's not done yet. Eight states are now under winter storm warnings and advisories, with heavy snow and ice expected to create hazardous conditions.

Alaska Faces Severe Weather

Alaska is facing the most severe weather, with up to 12 inches of snow in some areas.

  • Seward, a popular gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, is expected to receive between 6 and 12 inches of snow.
  • Wind gusts may reach 40 miles per hour.
  • Travel in the area is expected to be very difficult, so it's best to avoid any unnecessary trips.

Wisconsin Braces for Heavy Snowfall

Wisconsin is also bracing for heavy snowfall:

  • Door County is expected to receive between 4 and 7 inches.
  • Other parts of the state, including Southern and Northern Marinette County, Brown, Kewaunee, Calumet, and Manitowoc counties, are expected to receive between 2 and 4 inches.
  • The snow is expected to make travel difficult, which could impact travelers heading to Chicago for the NFL Playoff game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers.

Other States Under Winter Weather Advisories

Other states under winter weather advisories include:

  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Vermont

These states are expected to receive varying amounts of snow and ice, with some areas receiving up to 7 inches of snow. The NWS warns that these conditions can make travel quite difficult, especially overnight and early morning, when roads are often not cleared or winterized with the same urgency.

Travel Advisory

If you must travel, the NWS advises:

  • Keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
  • Stay updated on the latest flight information at your local airport or with your airline, as these conditions could impact flights across the country.
