The building industry is embracing sustainability, and recycled cement mortar (RCM) is gaining traction. But how strong is it? Smart technology is stepping in to provide answers.

The Power of Artificial Neural Networks

Scientists have turned to artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the strength of RCM. To enhance their performance, they employed smart algorithms as coaches. These algorithms included:

  • Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO)
  • Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)
  • Genetic Algorithm (GA)

Gathering Data

The team collected comprehensive data on RCM, considering factors such as:

  • Water-cement ratio
  • Cement-sand ratio
  • Fly ash content
  • Amount of recycled materials
  • Drying time

They also explored how different volumes of data impacted the results.

The Results

The ANNs, guided by the smart algorithms, performed exceptionally well. The PSO-ANN model emerged as the top performer, highlighting the significance of:

  • Water-cement ratio
  • Cement-sand ratio
  • Drying time

Interestingly, the complexity of the smart coaches had a greater impact on processing time than the volume of data.

A Step Forward in Sustainable Construction

This study demonstrates the potential of smart technology in designing better, greener building materials. However, it's crucial to remember that real-world conditions can be unpredictable, and models may not always be perfect.

Nonetheless, this is a significant step forward in making construction more sustainable.
