Silver Dressings: A New Hope for Lower Extremity Bypass Patients
USAThursday, January 23, 2025
Silver dressings work by releasing small amounts of silver ions. These ions have antimicrobial properties, which means they can help fight off infections. While silver dressings have been used in other types of surgery, their use in lower extremity bypasses is less common. We wanted to know if they could help reduce the rate of SSIs in our patients.
The switch to silver dressings wasn't an easy decision. We had to consider the pros and cons. On one hand, if they worked, it could mean fewer infections and happier patients. On the other hand, if they didn't, it could mean wasted resources and no change in infection rates. But we thought it was worth a shot.
