Shockwaves in China: Deadly Earthquake Strikes Near Mount Everest
Tibet, ChinaThursday, January 9, 2025
The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest of which measured 4. 4 on the Richter scale. Rescue efforts are underway, with approximately 1, 500 workers dispatched to search for survivors among the rubble. The epicenter was located about 50 miles northeast of Mount Everest, with several nearby communities at risk.
The Tibet region is home to around 6, 900 people within a 12-mile radius of the epicenter. The area's geological instability, a result of the colliding tectonic plates, has led to numerous strong earthquakes over the past century, including this latest one. The full extent of the damage and casualties may not be known for some time, particularly in the remote mountainous areas near the epicenter.
