Serbian Students Lead New Year's Eve Protest for Justice

In Belgrade and other Serbian cities, thousands of people swapped the usual New Year's Eve celebrations for a protest. They were demanding political reforms and justice following a tragic collapse in Novi Sad. University students led the charge, using the slogan "No New Year Until We Get Justice. " The crowd fell silent at 11:52 p. m. to honor the 15 victims. They carried banners with red handprints, symbolizing the blood on authorities' hands. The protest was a response to corruption and shoddy construction practices blamed for the disaster. Despite the festive season, protesters showed unwavering commitment.

Support came from various groups, reflecting widespread discontent with President Aleksandar Vucic. Similar gatherings happened in Novi Sad and Nis. State-sponsored concerts and celebrations went on in Belgrade, but the crowds preferred the student-led protest. The cold weather didn't deter them. A week before, tens of thousands had rallied in one of the biggest gatherings in recent years. The public prosecutor indicted 13 people, but protesters felt it wasn't enough. Vucic claimed all student demands were met, but protests continue.
