Seeing More Crime in Sunnyvale?

For years, Sunnyvale has been known as a safe city with lots of high-tech companies and wealthy areas. But recently, there's been a spike in crimes, and the local police union wants the city to be more open about it. Violent crimes went up by 15. 6% from 2022 to 2023, and a whopping 59% in the last ten years, according to a state crime database. This includes robberies shooting up by 34%, aggravated assaults by 76%, and rapes by 45% over the decade. The use of firearms in these crimes has also jumped, with a 70% increase in robberies and 58% in assaults from 2022 to 2023. The Sunnyvale Public Safety Officers Association (PSOA) posted these numbers online because they think the city should also be sharing this data. The union's president, Devon Klein, thinks it's unfair to keep the community in the dark. But the city says they need time to check the union's numbers because they started collecting their own data in 2021 and their methods are different. City spokesperson Jennifer Garnett said the city is seriously looking into these concerns and is committed to sharing data and keeping the community safe.

Klein wants the city to figure out why crime is going up and how to better resource the Public Safety Department, like adding more officers. But Klein also says they want to start a conversation, not cause panic. They want to know how to keep Sunnyvale safe for everyone. Meanwhile, big cities nearby like San Jose and Santa Clara have seen different trends. San Jose had a 3. 6% drop in violent crimes from 2022 to 2023, and Santa Clara saw a 33% drop in the same period. But both cities also saw increases in violent crimes over the last ten years. Some examples of recent crimes in Sunnyvale include a big jewelry store robbery in June, where 20 people smashed displays and ran off with jewelry. There were also two other smash-and-grab incidents at local jewelry stores this year.
