Second Chance at Education: How Donations Boost GED Scores

In Idaho, the Adult Education Center at North Idaho College is a beacon of hope for those seeking a fresh start. With free tuition and learning materials, it welcomes anyone over 16 who wants to improve their basic skills. Many students come from diverse backgrounds, some having dropped out of school due to illness or family problems. Others are adults looking to improve their job prospects. Surprisingly, one of the oldest students was 79, driven by the desire to inspire his great-grandchildren. The GED test, which covers language arts, math, science, and social studies, is a crucial step for many. However, the average cost of $154 can be a barrier for some. Without external help, many students struggle to afford the tests. Recently, a community donation drive called Press Christmas for All stepped in, providing enough funds for 90 test vouchers.

The impact was immediate and significant. This year, a record 64 students earned their GEDs, compared to the usual 48. The center also saw a surge in GED testing, with 91 tests administered in October alone, doubling the figures from the previous two Octobers. Instructors attributed this success directly to the financial assistance provided. The center's goal is to continue helping students achieve their educational dreams, lifting them out of poverty and improving their lives. This progress wouldn't be possible without the generous community donations. Beneficiaries include the elderly, disabled, veterans, and those with mental illnesses, all of whom maintain their dignity while receiving much-needed support. The community can donate to Press Christmas for All through various methods, ensuring all funds help local residents.
