Schools face tough choices when rules clash
Jefferson County, Colorado, USASunday, June 14, 2026
Last year, a complaint led to an investigation about how the district handles overnight trips. A family had sued after their daughter was assigned to share a room with a transgender student. Federal officials later ruled that Jeffco’s policies on bathrooms, sleeping arrangements, and sports broke Title IX. But their own statements kept shifting—first saying boys were playing on girls’ teams, then adding words like “may” and “up to. ”
The federal office now threatens to cut off funding if the district doesn’t change its policies. Jeffco says it’s still in talks and hasn’t run out of time. The district calls the situation impossible: state law says one thing, federal guidance says another. Until this gets sorted, schools are stuck trying to follow rules that don’t always agree.
