As the world continues to grapple with the rapid advancements made in artificial intelligence (AI), the Biden administration has announced a two-day international AI safety gathering in San Francisco, set to take place on November 20 and 21. This meeting marks a significant step forward in the global effort to contain the potentially catastrophic risks posed by AI. Government scientists and AI experts from at least nine countries, including the European Union, will come together to coordinate on safely developing AI technology and averting its dangers. The focus will be on addressing pressing concerns such as AI-generated fakery and the need for guardrails when AI systems become too advanced or dangerous.

The meeting is a direct follow-up to the AI Safety Summit held in the United Kingdom, where delegates pledged to work together to address the risks posed by AI. Since then, the UK, along with other countries, has established publicly backed safety institutes to advance research and testing of AI technology. By bringing together experts from around the world, the meeting aims to set standards for addressing the risks of AI-generated synthetic content and AI being used maliciously by actors.
