Russia's Massive Fine on Google: A Symbolic Strike?
USA, RussiaFriday, November 1, 2024
You might think, "Why bother with such a huge fine? " Well, the Kremlin says it's not about the money but about getting Google's attention. They want Google to stop blocking Russian broadcasters.
Some Russian media outlets are even taking this to other countries. They've asked courts in Turkey, Hungary, Spain, and South Africa to enforce the Russian court's decision. South Africa's High Court has already granted a motion to seize some of Google's assets in that country.
This fine is so big, it's even larger than a googol, which has 100 zeros. Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, chose the name 'googol' for their search engine because they wanted to organize a lot of information.
While Google's parent company, Alphabet, saw a dip in shares after the news, it's unclear how this will play out. One thing's for sure, this is a story that's going to keep growing.
