Roeg Sutherland Talks Independent Film Boom During Tough Times

Roeg Sutherland, who heads CAA’s Media Finance department and International Film Group, sees a silver lining in the current shift of the Hollywood landscape. Speaking at the Zurich Summit, Sutherland explained that the decrease in studio productions opens opportunities for independent films to shine. Generations of actors run in his family, but Sutherland chose a different path. He found his calling in financing independent films, a role that came with various challenges and learning experiences. Sutherland's journey began with a brief stint as a stand-in for Marlon Brando, which he remembered vividly. His father, Donald Sutherland, had instilled a sense of realism in him, observing that only half of one's effort as an actor made it onto the screen. Sutherland preferred controlling the whole rather than just a part, leading him to the finance side of the industry.

At CAA, Sutherland hasn't looked back. Although he initially struggled to find his footing, he eventually found his niche as the independent film sector started to flourish post-2006 economic crisis. He's played a crucial role in financing films like "The Wrestler" and "Black Swan," understanding that success often comes from rolling with the punches. When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the Cannes Film Festival, Sutherland and his team stepped up, creating a virtual market. According to Sutherland, collaboration is key. He believes that when the independent community works together, they achieve great success.
