Revitalizing Rural Sewage Sludge: A New Path to Green Fertilizer
Sunday, December 15, 2024
The mix of microbes inside the reactors changed from bacteria that break down sugar and protein to other types that love warmth and a specific bacteria named Run-SP154. One type, Methanothrix, was very common and stayed that way. Another type, Methanolinea, grew over time. Amazingly, when this treated sludge was used to grow mulberry plants, they did better than with regular chemical fertilizers. This shows a promising way to handle sewage in small, decentralized systems.
