Reality TV Moves Back Home

Ireland, DublinTuesday, May 5, 2026

Fox often films its shows outside the U.S., but many studios are looking to bring production closer to home.
A recent example is “The Floor,” a game show shot in Ireland because it was cheaper to travel there than to film on the Fox lot.

Domestic Work Highlights

Fox executives emphasize their substantial work in America, citing staples like:

  • “Kitchen Nightmares”
  • “Hell’s Kitchen”
  • The new dating series “Marriage Market.”

When Abroad Wins

Some programs thrive overseas. Partnerships with local production companies and tax incentives make foreign locations attractive, especially for studio‑based projects.

Creative reasons also drive location choices:

  • Peacock’s “Love Island USA”
  • Amazon’s “Beast Games”

These shows use exotic settings—beaches, mountains—to boost visual appeal and keep the narrative fresh.

Cost and Logistics Drive Shifts

Other networks adjust production based on cost and logistics.
Jay Pharoah, host of “The Quiz with Balls,” noted that the show moved from Australia to Belgium after U.S. policy changes made domestic filming cheaper. He joked about Belgian food but appreciated the savings.

Streaming giants also decide based on partner locations:

  • “The Golden Ticket” (produced in Australia)
  • “Monopoly” (shot in the UK, where its production house operates)

The Bottom Line

While U.S. production is preferred, global partnerships still play a big role. Networks weigh many factors: cost, logistics, creative vision, and partner location. If a show can be made well and cheaply elsewhere, they will consider it; otherwise, they’ll film at home.
