Raccoon Roundworm Alert: A Wake-Up Call for LA County Residents
South Bay, USAThursday, September 19, 2024
Raccoons are common in urban areas, and their feces can contaminate soil, water, and other materials. When humans ingest these contaminated substances, they can become infected with the raccoon roundworm. Young children and people with developmental disabilities are more susceptible to infection due to their tendency to put contaminated objects in their mouths.
"The health of humans and animals is intricately linked," said Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County health officer. "By taking simple precautions like washing your hands regularly, avoiding direct contact with wild animals and their waste, keeping pets healthy, and preventing wildlife from living near our homes, we can protect our neighborhoods and families."
