Quick Detection: Finding Harmful Chemicals in Lotus Roots

There's a problem in our food chain: harmful chemicals called halogenated carbazoles (HCZs) are found in lotus roots. These roots are a common food, but they contain starch, protein, and fat, making it tough to detect HCZs. Scientists have come up with a new way to solve this issue. They've created a special material called chitosan-glutaraldehyde-graphene oxide aerogel (CS-GA-GOA) and used it in a monolithic extraction column (MEC).

This column can quickly and effectively extract four types of HCZs from lotus roots in just five minutes. The method is not only fast but also very sensitive and accurate, detecting HCZs at very low levels. Plus, it's cheaper than other methods. This discovery opens up new possibilities for using graphene oxide aerogels in food testing and could lead to faster and more reliable ways to detect harmful chemicals in our food.
