Putin's Grip on Power: A Russian TV Host's Comment Sparks Gasps
RussiaMonday, September 23, 2024
Solovyov's statement was met with shock and confusion, as he appeared to suggest that the Russian president should resign. However, it was later clarified that he was actually referring to the creation of a "headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief," a pre-revolutionary military body of the Russian Imperial Army. This term, known as Stavka, was used during World War I to refer to the headquarters of the Russian army.
Despite the clarification, the comment still sparked a heated debate about Putin's hold on power. With his popularity growing since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it seems unlikely that the Russian president will step down anytime soon. Putin has been in power since 2000, and his latest presidential term, secured in the March 2024 election, will allow him to remain in office until 2036.
