Pulse Nightclub is torn down a decade after the deadly attack
A gray stone building that once hosted one of America’s worst shootings is now rubble. The site, where a gunman killed 49 people and wounded many more, will be replaced by a memorial. The demolition happened after the city bought the property in 2023.
The attacker, Omar Mateen, was shot dead by police after a three‑hour siege. He had bought the weapons used in the attack—a handgun and an AR‑15 style rifle—just weeks before. During the shooting he called 911, pledged loyalty to ISIS, and said he was a supporter of the group.
Before the tragedy, authorities had already examined Mateen for extremist ties. In 2013 he made statements that the FBI found inflammatory, and in 2014 they looked into him as a possible suicide bomber. All investigations were later closed.
The removal of the nightclub comes while LGBTQ rights face new challenges. Early in his second term, President Trump issued orders that barred transgender people from military service and sports teams, and cut federal funds for transition care. The state had recently covered a rainbow crosswalk that marked the club’s location, and a Pride flag was taken down from a national monument in New York.
The demolition also follows other violent incidents that may have terrorist links. Teenagers were arrested for planting bombs at an anti‑Muslim protest in New York, and a car attack on a Detroit synagogue was linked to relatives of a Lebanese militant group. These events highlight the ongoing threat of extremist violence.
