Public Workers Get a Boost: Biden's New Law
USAMonday, January 6, 2025
Edward Kelly, head of the International Association of Fire Fighters, thinks this is a huge deal. He said, "This law finally corrects a 40-year unfairness, especially for the families of firefighters. Now, firefighters can actually afford to retire on their modest wages. " The law has also been praised by union leaders like Lee Saunders, who said it will help over two million public service workers get the benefits they deserve.
But not everyone is happy. Senator Thom Tillis from the Republican side thinks this move prioritizes quick fixes over long-term planning. The new law might speed up the financial trouble for the Social Security Trust Fund, which could run out of money by 2035. Plus, the Social Security Administration, already short on staff and funds, will face more challenges.
While this law is a big step for fairness, it also raises concerns about the future of the Social Security program. It's like giving someone a better deal today, but worrying about the bill tomorrow.
